Course
Description
The purpose of this course is to acquaint the student with some of
the basic ideas, techniques, and technology in probability and statistics and with the
application of these techniques to problems. The course will cover most of the
textbook. In addition, Minitab, a statistical software package for computers,
will be discussed and students will be asked to become familiar with the use of
this software for carrying out statistical procedures. The prerequisite for this
course is a knowledge of algebraic concepts typically covered in high school
algebra I and II courses. You will need a TI -83 or 84 graphing calculator for this course. Some of the topics covered during the
course are listed below:
Exploring, Describing and Understanding Data
Relationships between Variables
Linear Regression and Correlation
Methods for Gathering Data
Probability and Random Variables
Normal and Binomial Distributions
Sampling Distribution Models
Confidence Intervals and Hypothesis Tests for Proportions
Confidence Intervals and Hypothesis Tests for Means
Inference for Means and Proportions of Two Populations
Paired samples and Blocks
Analysis of Counts using Chi-Square Models
Chi-Square Tests of Independence
Course Goals
A student completing this course should gain the following: a
knowledge of general statistical skills which will equip the student to better
use statistics to analyze and solve problems; an appreciation for the need to
consider logical step-by-step procedures in the approach to solving problems;
and a greater understanding of technology &critical thinking and the use of
technology & critical
thinking in statistical analysis.
Student
Responsibilities
To be successful in this course a student should do the following:
1. Regularly participate in class activities. APSU Faculty are required to
report participation. Lack of participation and assignment completion will be
reported to University Officials.
2. Complete all assigned work in a timely manner.
3. Utilize tutoring resources as needed.
4. Network with other students in class. Informal cooperative learning has been
shown to be a successful study technique.
5. Take responsibility for your own learning. Your attitude toward mathematics
and the effort that you put into this course will be reflected in your grade
this semester. If you approach mathematics with an "I can" attitude rather than
an "I never have been able to" attitude, your chances for success will greatly
increase. The typical college mathematics course requires a student to study and
prepare for 2 to 3 hours for each hour of lecture instruction. Therefore, for
this course you should expect to spend a minimum of 9-15 hours per week reading,
working problems, completing assigments and preparing for tests. Contact me
early in the semester if you are have difficulty in the class.
Special Needs
Students who have a condition that may affect their academic
performance are encouraged to contact the instructor via email immediately or to
make an appointment with the Coordinator of Disability Services (Clement 140,
telephone 221-6230 or TTY phone 221-6278) to discuss the matter.
Graded
Activities (Assignments & Tests)
Your semester grade will be based on online tests that follow each
chapter, online homework for each chapter, four project assignments that utilize
Minitab 14 or 15 statistical software, and two in-class proctored exams (midterm & final).
Details on the weights of tests & assignments are provided below:
All of your grades will be posted on the CourseCompass
grade book. You can access your grades there as well as see how all your grades
will contribute to your course grade at the end of the term. At the end of the
semester, your grade will be determined using the following information:
| Assignment | Possible Points | Comments |
| Cc Online Homework | 60 | At the end of the term, if your percentage grade for homework is 91%, you earned .91(60) = 54.6 points of the possible 60 in this category. |
| Cc Online Quizzes | 100 | At the end of the term, if your percentage grade for quizzes is 74%, you earned .74(100) = 74 points of the possible 100 on this category. |
| Minitab Projects | 100 | This points will be earned through three 20 point projects and one 40 point project |
| Proctored, closed book, paper & pencil Midterm Exam. | 150 | This exam will cover chapters 1 - 6 |
| Proctored, closed book, paper & pencil comprehensive Final Exam. | 150 | This exam will cover chapters 1 - 12. |
| TOTAL | 560 |
Your course grade will be determined by the percentage of points you earned of
the total possible points to be earned in the course following the following
scale:
504 - 560 A
448 - 503 B
392 - 447 C
336 - 391 D
few than 336 points F, FA or FN
The midterm & final exams will be free response problems and partial credit will
be awarded based on the amount of work shown in the event the answer is not
correct.
The midterm exam will cover chapters 1 - 6. The final exam is
comprehensive and will cover chapters 1 - 12.
Please be sure to note that there will be two proctored tests for this course. Those tests will be standard paper & pencil tests.
The midterm & final exams will be free response problems
and partial credit will be awarded based on the amount of work shown in the
event the answer is not correct.
