Competitive Event (individual) - SSC A-304
Dr. J. Foote (Chemistry Department)
The participant must titrate three 15 mL samples of hydrochloric acid solution with sodium hydroxide solution. Both acid and base solutions will be roughly 0.1 M each. Participant must present evidence of having completed all three trials. All calculations will be done by the instructor who is supervising the contest. Speed, accuracy and precision will be rewarded. Scoring will be obtained from the following equation:
Score = {10,000} - {(time)(accuracy + precision)} - {penalty}* = 10,000 - {T(sec)} {D1(ml) + D2(mL)} - {0 or 100}*
T = total elapsed time in seconds between "go" and "endpoint"
D1 = difference in mL between the average titration volume and the true volume (accuracy)
D2 = difference in mL between highest and lowest volume (precision)
*If you badly overshoot a titration, you may omit that one from your scoring at the penalty of 100 points.
Each session is limited to 24 participants.
