APSU Science ExpOlympics - 2000
Overview of Science ExpOlympics - 2000
This year's Science ExpOlympics will feature thirty separate competitive events, activities, and demonstrations in the areas of biology, chemistry, geology, math and computer science, and physics, as well as four teacher workshops. A $5.00 registration fee is required for all high school students attending the Science ExpOlympics; this money will be used to offset the costs of t-shirts that will be awarded to all competitive event winners and door-prize-winners for all activities and demonstrations. Due to rebuilding of some of the campus's tornado damaged buildings and destruction of the student center to make room for construction of a new student center, there will not be a Sites Jewelers' Science Bowl competition this year.
History of APSU Science ExpOlympics
The Science ExpOlympics program was first held at APSU in 1983. It was organized on the APSU campus by Dr. John Foote and has subsequently been coordinated by Drs. Foote, Fred J. Matthews, and Lori Slavin, as well as Ms. Diane Simmons, all members of the Chemistry Department at APSU. The Science ExpOlympics has been held 10 times over the past 17 years with the Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Physics, and Psychlogy departments at APSU contributing events that have challenged, amused, and been thought provoking to more than 2000 students from over 25 high-schools. The Sites Jewelers' Science Bowl has been won by three different high-schools over the years, including Waverly , Hume-Fogg , Smyrna, and Hopkinsville high schools.
