Taxonomy: Two subspecies are recognized (de Queiroz and Reeder 2008), but only the Eastern Slender Glass Lizard (O. a. longicaudus) occurs in Tennessee (Conant 1998).
Distribution: The Slender Glass Lizard is known from 27 counties scattered across the state, but it has yet to be documented from the counties in northwest and northeast Tennessee.

Conservation Status: Tennessee populations of Ophisaurus attenuatus are considered Wildlife in Need of Management by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Commission (Proclamation 00-14, Wildlife in Need of Management) and are given a state ranking of S3 (rare and uncommon in the state, from 21-100 occurrences) by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Natural Heritage (Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation 2004).
