Taxonomy:
Three subspecies are recognized (Crother
et al. 2008). The distribution map
provided by Conant and Collins (1998) show
L. c. rhombomaculata (Mole Kingsnake) in eastern Tennessee and
L. c. calligaster (Prairie Kingsnake)
in the northern half of western and central Tennessee, with intergradient
populations in the southern half of western and central Tennessee.
Distribution: Based on museum and
literature records, the Yellow-bellied Kingsnake is well documented from
counties in the southern two-thirds of eastern Tennessee from Polk to Cocke
counties and north-central Tennessee, from Weakley to Robertson counties.
Records are lacking for the counties of
northeastern Tennessee and many counties in the central and extreme western
parts of the state.

Questionable
and/or Erroneous Records: One
specimen was collected by Glenn Gentry in 1958 (LSUMZ 34955) from Natchez Trace
State Park. No specific county was
provided and the Park occurs in both Carroll and Henderson counties.
To denote the possibility that the specimen was from Henderson County, a
question mark was placed in Henderson County on the distribution map for the
species.
