Taxonomy:
Of three recognized subspecies (Crother et al. 2008) of Red-bellied Snake,
S. o. occipitomaculata (Northern
Red-bellied Snake) occurs across most of Tennessee.
Intergradient populations with S.
o. obscura (Florida Red-bellied Snake) occur in the most southwestern
counties (Conant and Collins 1998).
Distribution:
Scattered
records exist for counties throughout most of Tennessee, but conspicuous voids
in the distribution are evident across all of the state.

Questionable and/or Erroneous Records:
In the catalog at the U. S. National Museum there
is an entry for a specimen (USNM No. 2140) from Tyree Springs in Sumner County.
During our visit, we were unable to find the specimen in the collection
and it has apparently been lost. Because we could not verify the data with a
specimen, we chose not to plot this locality on the distribution map for the
species and excluded Sumner County from our list of counties for which specimens
have been examined (see above).
Conservation Status:
None.
