Taxonomy: According to de Queiroz and Reeder (2008), this is a monotypic species without any recognized subspecies. 

Distribution: The distribution of P. inexpectatus is poorly known in Tennessee.  Records exist from 14 counties scattered across the state from the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the Mississippi River in the west.
