Taxonomy: Two subspecies of Apalone mutica are listed by Iverson et al. (2008); the one occurring in Tennessee is A. m. mutica, the Midland Smooth Softshell (Conant and Collins 1998). 

Distribution: The Smooth Softshell has been documented across the northern half of Tennessee from Pickett County westward in the Cumberland River drainage, the lower Tennessee River drainage, and the Reelfoot Lake area of the Mississippi River drainage.
