Taxonomy:  Six subspecies are recognized for Apalone spinifera (Iverson et al. 2008).

Distribution: The Spiny Softshell is thought to occur statewide in Tennessee.  Verified records are lacking for the Cumberland Plateau and a dozen counties in upper northeastern Tennessee.  These may or may not represent real gaps in the distribution of the species in Tennessee.  The range map provided by Conant and Collins (1998) depicts A. s. spinifera (Eastern Spiny Softshell) as occurring across most of Tennessee.  However, Apalone s. asper (Gulf Coast Spiny Softshell) may occur in the Conasauga River in East Tennessee.  The Conasauga River is Tennessee’s only stream that is part of the Alabama River Drainage.
