Taxonomy: One monotypic species of this rattlesnake is recognized in Tennessee.  This is based on three studies, one (Clark et al. 2003) using mtDNA and the others (Pisani et al. 1973, Allsteadt et al. 2006) using external morphology, all of which concluded that the subspecies of Timber Rattlesnakes (C. h. horridus and C. h. atricaudatus) originally named by Gloyd (1935) are unjustified.

Distribution: Timber Rattlesnakes occur statewide, persisting only in areas where human occupation and disturbance are minimal.
