As the
world becomes more complex, there is an increasing need for
Statisticians to collect and analyze data. For example, Statisticians are employed by
pharmaceutical companies to determine the effectiveness and safety of
new medications; by industrial companies to determine if manufacturing
processes are under control; by insurance companies to help set policy
rates and estimate probable payoffs; by marketing firms to analyze
consumer demand; and by governmental agencies to plan and develop
services for various segments of society. The Bureau of Labor
Statistics expects the demand for non-academic jobs in statistics to increase through at least 2008.
While there are jobs for statisticians with
undergraduate degrees, a number of statistical jobs require an advanced
degree. Undergraduate programs, such as the new
concentration in statistics at Austin Peay State University are
excellent preparation for further work at the Master's level.
