2004-05 Activities of XEM - the chemistry club

In September we helped our department host a section meeting - “Mad Hatters”

We served refreshments for the 100+ in attendance

We were once again active in local schools as well as the Adventure Science Center “Chemistry Day”

Dan and Rachel are ready to explode variations on the methanol cannon!

We helped kids learn about UV light!

and lots of things about nutrition

Lots of students went to Nashville for “Chemistry Day”

We showed kids how clinical test strips were used

All ages participated

Joe made our famous ice cream

with liquid nitrogen of course

Love that t-shirt!

while Kenneth played with bubbles

and so did the kids (and parents)

Doesn't this look like fun

Everyone likes to make bubbles

The big bubble

look close - a bubble in a bubble!

as always the mole song was a hit

We also gave science fair workshops here and at APSU

for students in grades 6-12

We always participate in GHOST - safe trick or treating

What a crazy bunch of guys! We also hand out chemistry magazines from NCW

and even let the kids shell corn off the cob like the old days

During the 2nd semester we judged science fairs in local schools & did more demo shows

including outreach to 3 campus residence halls

all leading up to the Middle TN Science and Engineering Fair!

Here come the students!

Lance judges for our XEM award

It was a beautiful fair with about 150 projects in grades 6-12

Our own students presented their previous summer research . . .

and we sponsored an oral presentation competition of high school research

These are good hearted XEM members who sacrificed a Saturday close to finals to help

We provided a snack lunch for those in attendance

Here are some of the students and teachers who participated

Springtime means we help “Plant the campus red”

and even one day before graduation we had a group of 50 middle school students in for activities

slime, hot & cold packs, a planetarium tour and a LABMAN demo show for these students finished our year

and the students were very appreciative. . . it was a good year
