Syllabus: Biology 2021 Lab, Spring 2012

James F. Thompson, Ph.D., MT(ASCP)

SSC B210, 221-6286, thompsonj@apsu.edu

Office Hours:  M-W-F 10-11 AM and by appointment

For a detailed description of Dr. Thompson’s A&P lecture and lab courses and associated course policies, see the complete lecture syllabus posted at Dr. Thompson’s web site.

Final Lab Grade = (lab reports average + mid-term lab practical score + final lab practical score)/3

Written lab reports and APSU D2L lab homework are due the week after you attended your lab.  See the complete D2L homework assignment due dates calendar posted at Dr. Thompson’s web site.

Make-up regular lab sessions: Note: it is always best to attend a different lab taught by your regular instructor if you know you have to miss a lab session.  If that is not possible, then, it is then best to attend a lab session that same week taught by a different instructor.  Most other instructors will give permission if there is room in their lab for an additional student.  Only if your attempts to attend an alternate regular lab session fail, should you arrange for an individual make-up lab session.  To do this, schedule a make-up appointment with the lab assistants in SSC C107 or the Lab Manager, Ms. Perez, in SSC C110.  Neither the lab assistants nor Ms. Perez will be able to assist you in the make up; they are only going to provide you with the correct equipment and materials needed for the lab.  You will be on your own to complete your lab assignments correctly. Generally, lab make-ups are scheduled for Mondays or Fridays.  Your lab report for that week is due at the regular time, but the points will only be awarded upon confirmation that you have completed the lab activities in the lab make-up.  Only one make-up will be accepted per semester, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Make-up lab practicals: Note: it is always best to attend a different lab practical taught by your regular instructor if you know you have to miss a lab practical.  If that is not possible, then, it is then best to attend a lab practical that same week taught by a different instructor.  Most other instructors will give permission if there is room in their lab for an additional student.  Otherwise, you will have to make special arrangements.  See Dr. Thompson for details.  Lab practicals are taken down the Monday following the week of the practical, so if you have not made up the practical by that time, it will not be possible to make it up, and you will lose the points, regardless of your circumstances.

To realize the most success in Biology 2021:

1.  Print out the Lab Guide, found in D2L, describing that week’s lab well before the start of your lab so you have time for step 2.

2.  Read the contents of the Lab Guide and the parts of the Lab Manual the Lab Guide references to familiarize yourself with the activities that you will perform in the lab.

3.  Begin completing your lab report, including answering the questions in the Lab Manual (Marieb & Mitchell, 2011. Human Anatomy and Physiology Laboratory Manual, Cat Version, 10th ed.) as soon as possible after you complete your lab activities so you will have time to research the answers and clear up questions before the assignment deadline.    Report any difficulties in submitting lab homework on D2L to your instructor as soon as possible.
