The APSU Summer Guitar Workshop, under the auspices of the Center of Excellence for the
Creative Arts, hosts a three-division performance competition:
- Collegiate/Post-Collegiate Classical Guitar
- Pre-Collegiate Classical Guitar
- Pre-Collegiate Fingerstyle
Collegiate/Post Collegiate Classical Guitar Competition
This division is open to guitarists who are college
students or recently-graduated performers who are in the
early stages of their career, regardless of age. Entrants
are not required to enroll in the workshop, but are welcome
do so if they wish. The competition entry fee is $175 for
non-workshop participants. Entrants enrolled in the workshop
pay a $75 dollar entry fee. Non-workshop participants may
audit, though not participate in, workshop events.
The competition consists of three rounds:

preliminary round — Monday, June 28 and Tuesday, June 29
-
semi-final round — Wednesday, June 30
- final round — Thursday, July 1
The competition first-prize winner is required to perform
on the closing competition-winners and artist-faculty gala concert held
on the evening of Friday, July 2.
Four competitors will be chosen for the final round, which is open to the public.
Three prizes will be awarded as follows:
- First Prize — $2,000
- Second Prize — $750
- Third Prize — $350
Competitors will submit a 25-minute program consisting of at
least three separate pieces of contrasting styles to be performed in the final round. For the
earlier rounds, competitors select pieces from their proposed final-round program as follows:

preliminary round — 2 contrasting pieces not to exceed 7 minutes duration (excerpts are acceptable)

semi-final round — 3 contrasting pieces not to exceed 15 minutes duration (excerpts are acceptable)
-
final round — the complete 25-minute program
Competitors must present an official identification document (drivers license, student ID, etc.)
at the preliminary round. Please note that prize-winners must present a US
Social Security number in order to receive payment.
Non-workshop participant competitors may take advantage of on-campus
single-occupancy housing at a six-day rate of $235 (inclusive of all meals). Housing
must be reserved in advance.
The Collegiate
Competition Registration Form, proposed program and entry fee should be mailed
to Dr. Stanley Yates at the address provided at the end of this document by June 1.
The proposed program must also be sent by e-mail to YatesS@apsu.edu.
Applications received after June 1 will require an additional $25 fee.

Pre-Collegiate Classical Guitar and Fingerstyle Guitar Performance Competitions
These divisions are open to workshop participants of high school age, grades 9-12,
and who have not yet started college. Competitors pay a $50 competition entry fee.
Please note that you must be a workshop participant in order to enter these divisions. The competitions
consists of two rounds:

preliminary round (fingerstyle) — Tuesday, June 29
preliminary round (classical) — Wednesday, June 30
-
final rounds — Thursday, July 1
The competition first-prize winners will perform on the closing competition-winners
and artist-faculty gala concert held on the evening of Friday, July 2.
Competitors will prepare a program not to exceed 15 minutes duration and consisting of
at least 3 pieces in contrasting styles.
Competitors select pieces from their proposed program as follows:

preliminary round — 2 contrasting pieces not to exceed 6 minutes (excerpts are acceptable)
-
final round — 3 or more contrasting pieces not to exceed 15 minutes
Three competitors will be chosen for the final rounds, which are open to the public.
Three prizes will be awarded in each division as follows:

First Prize — $500 plus full tuition scholarship for next year’s workshop

Second Prize — $200
-
Third Prize — $100

A printed copy of the proposed program should be submitted to the
adjudicators at the preliminary round. Once submitted, no changes may be made to
the proposed program. Competitors must also present an official identification
document that verifies their date of birth or high-school status (student ID,
etc.). Please note that prize-winners must present a
US Social Security number in order to receive payment.
All competitors in these divisions receive adjudicator comment sheets for
each performance.
Please add the $50 competition entry fee to the list of fees provided on the
Workshop Registration Form. Full payment of fees is due June 1.
